The filter tank is really THE key to the entire question. Most of the parts in the filter are not terribly expensive and can be replaced. BUT . . . when the filter tank goes, there are not much other choice but to replace the filter.You could opt to replace the top or bottom half of your filter (depending on which part cracked), but the other half of the filter is equally old and likely to give out as well. Plus, if you choose to replace your filter tank, the parts are most likely NOT in stock at any local dealer, so you will have to wait 2-3 weeks for the part.So . . . if your pool filter is approaching 10 years old and you are looking at spending hundreds of dollars on a repair, it only makes sense to consider replacing the filter with a new one. Here are the things to consider:

• A new filter comes with a three year parts and labor warranty.

• A new filter comes with a new backwash valve (if it is a DE filter).

If you put hundreds of dollars into an old filter and the tank cracks, you are looking at buying a new filter anyway and all the money is wasted that you put into the old filter.
