Sold under trade names like Nature2, Frog, etc., these typically add small amounts of copper, zinc, or silver to the water. The minerals allow you to lower your chlorine or bromine levels to around 1 PPM without adverse effects. Read the instructions on the package to understand the correct start-up procedure after adding a new cartridge- some require a shock treatment. Also, silver should not be used with bromine sanitizers due to risk of surface staining. It is extremely important to shock well with these systems, as the minerals kill the bacteria, but there is no oxidizer present to get rid of the organic material – leading to cloudy water. A good dose of non-chlorine shock will keep your water clear without causing your chlorine levels to increase dramatically.
