The champion of sanitizers, most prevalent in the form of tablets or granular (shock). Fairly inexpensive in comparison, but requires constant monitoring of chlorine levels in the 1 to 3 PPM range. Very effective, but some people find it irritating to eyes and mucous membranes. Storage can be a concern (always store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight).
An alternative is a chlorine generator (salt system). Some advantages to salt systems are a more steady chlorine level, a more comfortable swim environment (softer hair and skin), and less eye irritation. It is more expensive on the front end, but usually pays for itself by replacing chlorine tablets and reducing the use of shock. More people are replacing tablet feeders or floaters with salt. This system is compatible with most existing filters and pumps, and only requires quarterly maintenance to ensure it’s working efficiently. A common misconception is that the water will be like the ocean- in fact, the salt levels are actually about 1/20th the concentration of ocean water, or about 1/3rd the saltiness of a tear.
